Tomar Convent

We left the magnificent and sunny Lisbon and we head to the city of Tomar Templar land that constituted a reinforcement helping of the Christian army at the time of D. Afonso Henriques.

Under Prince Henry the Navigator, the order Master since 1418, cloisters were built between Charola and the fortress of the Knights Templar but the greatest changes occur in the reign of King John III, architecture sharing Romanesque features, Gothic, Manuelino, Mannerist and baroque.

Batalha Monastery

Alcobaça Monastery

The Royal Abbey of Santa Maria de Alcobaça also known as the Monastery of Santa Maria de Alcobaça is one of the masterpieces of architecture and Portuguese history, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989 and considered it one of the most important abbeys European Cistercians.

Donated by the first Portuguese king Dom Afonso Henriques to the Order of Cistercians of the construction of the abbey began in 1178 with the first truly work in the Gothic style built in Portugal.

Its general traits fall under the rigor, austerity and purity of constructive forms that characterised the Cistercian order that devoted to prayer, penance, renunciation of material goods and manual work in constant community.

Recently it was discovered the existence of a fourth cloister that have been destroyed during the great earthquake of 1755.

Especially the Chapter Room, the Sacristy, the Chapel of the Relics, the parlatório, the dormitory, the Monks Room, the Refectory, the Old Kitchen and Nova, the tombs of King Afonso and Afonso III and the very famous tombs of Dom Pedro and Dona Inês de Castro in what is considered one of the most beautiful but tragic love stories of Portugal.
Today these tombs are visited by many lovers that on the wedding day itself by saying that those who swear allegiance to this love sees eternity of their own.
