Edward VII Park (Parque Eduardo VII)

This mind-blowing and jaw-dropping Park stands within the Avenida da Liberdade and Marquis of Pombal Square. As a true and rich landmark, it happens to be the biggest and largest Park in the heart of Lisbon.

What it does to the tourist is the engagement it creates with his mind. It makes you want to put into the serenity and coolness of nature one more time. Missing such adventure is like deliberately spitting on knowledge and ignoring maximum relaxation. Make it your choice this vacation.

Christ’s Statue and Ponte 25 de Abril

The Cristo-Rei statue, located in Almada, at the southern bank of the Tejo Estuary, was inspired by the Cristo Redentor statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was inaugurated in 1959 and many believe its construction was part of a promise made by the portuguese episcopate to avoid Portugal’s involvement in World War II. Apart from the religious aspect, this place is also visited everyday by hundreds of people due to its exceptional views of Lisbon- it stands at almost 361 feet above the Tejo. Experience Lisbon from a different point of view: you’ll get a look at the north and south banks of the city, which are united by the 25th April Bridge, Ponte 25 de Abril.

Day 2

Historical area of Sintra
Historical area of Sintra

Historical area of Sintra

Sintra is something taken from a dream and put into cinema, only it’s real life, not just fantasy. Its idyllic aura comes mostly from the fact that it’s located on top of Sintra’s mountains, Serra de Sintra. There you’ll find some majestic buildings. You can either visit the Pena National Palace, which stands on a steep rock and is surrounded by a dense Park, Pena’s Park or the Regaleira Villa, one of Serra de Sintra’s most astonishing monuments. The tour includes an optional visit to the Palace of Queluz, which is often called the portuguese Versailles. As you can see it’s all grand, both the construction work and the nature that surrounds it.

Pena National palace

In 1838 King Fernando II bought the old Monastery of Jerónimos de Nossa Senhora da Pena that had been built on top of the Sintra mountains in 1511 by King Manuel I. King Fernando II had repair works done in all of the monastery, which gave the Palace its grand looks you see today. Built on top of a steep rock and surrounded by a dense forest of more than 500 exotic species from all around the globe, the Pena Palace has a privileged view of the green landscape and sea. Moreover the museum’s collection contains numerous artefacts of Portugal History. Get an inside look of what the Kings and Queens’ golden age looked like!

Pena National palace Pena National palace Regaleira Villa Regaleira Villa

Regaleira Villa

Your other option is the Regaleira Villa. This is also a majestic building amidst the great nature of the Sintra mountains. The Villa was built between 1904 and 1910 during monarchy’s final years. Millionaire António Monteiro “Milhões” got his nickname because of his big fortune which allowed him to achieve this venture. Italian architect Luigi Manini helped him bring his idea to life and create a microcosmos inside Serra de Sintra. The Regaleira mysterious aura helps to bolster Sintra’s mistique. Take a stroll in the lavish gardens and walk down the famous spiral staircase, the so-called Initiation Well.

Cape of Roca

On your way to Cascais you can’t miss the Cape of Roca -Cabo da Roca- the westernmost point of continental Europe. Here you have a broad view of the Sintra’s Mountains you’ve just visited and the wonderful coast. Historical records point the existence of a forte in the Cape during the 17th century, which played a crucial role on the watch of Lisbon’s entrance mainly during the Peninsular Wars. Currently there are only traces from this period, as well as the beacon that still guides sailors towards the shore. In addition to its historical importance, the Cape is an astonishing element of nature with its rugged coastline and fantastic pops of colour.

Cape of Roca Cape of Roca Mouth of Hell (Boca do Inferno) Mouth of Hell (Boca do Inferno)

Mouth of Hell

The tour continues as we leave Sintra and enter another village, Cascais. Here we’ll make another stop to see Boca do Inferno, which can be loosely translated as Mouth of Hell. This name was given due to its morphology and the tremendous impact of the waves when they hit the rocks. It’s one of the most emblematic viewpoints in Cascais and you’ll understand why when you get there and see the magnificence of the whole place.

Cascais Bay (village center)

Cascais and Estoril are located on the northern coast of Lisbon and are well known as two of Portugal’s most cosmopolitan villages. This has happened ever since King Luís I, at the end of the 19th century, chose the bay to be his home during summer.

Its mild climate and an estimated number of 260 days without rain during the whole year could be the reason why the royal family picked this place. Other rich families have also built here their mansions ever since.

Cascais Bay Cascais Bay Estoril Estoril

Estoril

Estoril’s reputation as a seaside resort comes a long way. Its most cosmopolitan beach, Praia do Tamariz, is located a short walking distance from Cascais and has a fantastic restaurant by the beach that turns into a disco on hot summer nights.

The Casino is also a must see. It’s one of the oldest casinos in Europe and is said to have been an inspiration to Ian Fleming, when he wrote one of his James Bond books, Casino Royale, in 1953.

Day 3

Fátima

Fátima is a city in the center of Portugal first and foremost known for its Shrine and as a pilgrimage place. But you’ll be surprised to find that there are other interesting locations in the surroundings for you to visit, such as the Ourém Castle, located at the highest point of the city of Ourém, as well as the city’s medieval village, Vila Medieval de Ourém. Apart from the architectural beauty of the county, there’s the quiet nature of Nascente do Agroal, Spring of Agroal. This is a speck of light in the midst of life’s chaos. As for other places to visit in the nature scene you have caves, or as the Portuguese call them: grutas. Drop by Grutas de Alvados, Grutas de Mira d’ Aire and Grutas de Santo António and discover Fátima’s hidden treasures!

Coimbra’s Sé Velha, which means Old Cathedral, was built during Afonso Henrique’s, Portugal’s first King, reign. It is a symbol of the Romanesque Architecture and has a beautiful gothic cloister where you can enjoy a quiet moment.
It’s location is very close to the university and the lower part of town, so you’ll see a lot of students and other inhabitants walk down this alley. The Cathedral is surrounded by many bars and restaurants, so it’s usually very crowded at night, especially during the Summer. Many refer to the surrounding area as Sé Velha, the Cathedral’s name and use it as meeting point for nights out, where they have a drink or two. The Old Cathedral also plays an important role during a student festivity called Queima das Fitas.

This event takes places every May, at the end of university’s semester, and the students take a week off to celebrate, go to concerts and attend the Serenata Monumental which takes place at the stairs of The Old Cathedral, where a group of Fado – Portuguese acclaimed music genre- plays a few songs for the students and the hundreds of people who attend this festivity every year.

Portugal dos Pequenitos

In English Portugal dos Pequenitos would be translated as Portugal of the Little Ones. This miniature park, inaugurated in 1940, has miniature versions of Portuguese typical houses and monuments, as well as pavilions dedicated to the former Portuguese colonies. It’s a fun experience for both children and adults: the little ones will be delighted with the size of the houses and monuments and the grown ups will have a chance to see a representation of Portugal’s History all in one place. Don’t miss the Costume Museum, Museu do Traje, in which 300 items of clothing from a period of time spanning 5 centuries are represented in miniatures as well.

Aveiro

Some call Aveiro the portuguese version of Venice because of its gondola alike Moliceiro. But there are other features in Aveiro. The streets aren’t steep, so taking long walks is a lot easier. Aveiro’s University also welcomes many students at the beginning of each year. The town’s laid back style and vibrant colours are a must see!

The current food system has put aside salt’s historical importance because of its modern systems of food conservation. Thus, Aveiro has lost its title of the biggest exporter of portuguese salt. Visit the historical Aveiro Saltpans and learn more about the history, tradition and secrets behind the salt extraction.

Barra and Costa Nova beaches

At the end of the tour we arrive at the beach. Barra and Costa Nova are the two most famous beaches in Aveiro. They both have that seasonal feel to it, as many of the people only go there on holidays. In fact, having a house by the sea is very common in Portugal. Barra is known for its emblematic beacon that is now a part of the site’s aesthetic. Take a stroll in the concrete wall by the beach – the paredão-, eat an ice cream or the famous tripa de Aveiro- a sweet dough, thicker as a crepe, which is served really hot, typically with cinnamon on top. There’s a tent that sells these at every 10 meters.

Costa Nova is best known for its brightly coloured-striped houses, which the portuguese call palheiros. They were originally built so the fishermen could store their material. Only years later did the families move in and paint them with the stripes, that have since been associated with this beach. They come in many colours and are a pop of joy, that turns the place unique.

Fisherman’s village of Nazaré

The village of Nazaré has one of the most famous beaches in Portugal. With its mild weather and natural beauty, Nazaré is best known as a fishing village, where the Fishmongers still use the seven skirts according to tradition.

On the right side, facing the sea, you have a jaw dropping promontory with one of the most famous views of the portuguese shoreline. Its unique name Sítio, which can be loosely translated as The Spot, consists of 318 meters of rock that plummet to the sea.

While you’re in there, you’ll have to wander the perpendicular streets towards the sea and let yourself be filled with the joy of this peaceful village. And don’t forget to eat sardines or a fish stew, the famous caldeirada. It would be a sin for you not to eat a big plate of fresh fish, while you’re in this renowned fisherman’s village.

Watch the big waves of Nazaré

Nazaré is nowadays considered to be one of great beaches to go surfing due its massive waves. Praia do Norte is one of them. In fact, it was here that Garrett McNamara successfully drifted down a curl that measured an impressive 78 feet, which has earned him the Guinness World Records title for Largest wave surfed.

See them for yourself during the visit. The biggest waves occur during winter time -from October until March, but in April you also can catch a glimpse of this phenomenon.

Óbidos

We arrive at last in Óbidos, a tiny and charming portuguese village. Óbidos is also known for its Castle, which was once given to a queen as an engagement present and since then became a tradition for some reigns. To visit this village it’s like taking a trip down to memory lane, to a place that it’s only familiar to us from books, images and History lessons. It’s like the village is frozen in time with its medieval features and ambiance. Don’t miss the chance to visit this charismatic site and to drink the famous “Ginjinha de Óbidos”, a liquor made out sour cherries.

Stop for Lunch

Lisbon and Cascais are established gourmet destinations.

Local gastronomy blends with the new wave of Chefs and tendencies to give a modern twist on traditional food.

The proximity to the coast also means guaranteed fresh fish and seafood.

Cascais

With an understated beauty, both in its mediterranean architecture as in its wild beaches, Cascais is one of the most exciting stops.

The sheer authenticity of a town and a people that has been largely unaffected by the times, make it one of the few destinations that feel, as of yet, undiscovered. Stroll the cobblestone roads leading down narrow, winding paths to the beach, watch local fishermen doing what they’ve done for centuries, and sample the freshest fish you’ll find anywhere in Europe, straight from the ocean that unfolds before you. This is the true pleasure of Cascais; the pristine little details that make it so authentic.

Estoril

Estoril is famed as a luxury entertainment destination on the Portuguese Riviera, as home of the Casino Estoril. Estoril is one of the most expensive places to live in the Iberian Peninsula. It is home to a sizable foreign expat community and known for its luxury restaurants, hotels like Hotel Estoril Palacio. During the Second World War, the region was the centre of spies and diplomatic secrecy, it became an international tourist destination both during and after the Second World War. During that time, several dignitaries and exiles came to Estoril: the Infante Juan, Count of Barcelona father of Juan Carlos I of Spain, also Umberto II of Italy and Carol II of Romania. It was also in estoril that former Portuguese dictator António de Oliveira Salazar had a summer fortress house.
